Music wants to be free
From 15th to 25th July 2007 Eileen Simpson & Ben White are resident at Cornerhouse, Manchester's international centre for contemporary arts, as part of ARTRADIO. Free-to-air centres around an invitation for bands and musicians to perform covers, versions and interpretations of the 1920s and 30s out-of-copyright folk, blues, and jazz from the Open Music Archive. A series of live plugged and unplugged performances will take place in the Cornerhouse gallery at 5pm daily and be broadcast live on the radio and streamed online (106.5FM / artradio.fm). Performances will be recorded and licensed under Creative Commons ShareAlike, generating a new resource – free for use and reuse in the future. Live sessions include performances by LA77, The Travelling Band, Magic Arm, Liz Green, Lady Caroline Mary, Homelife Duo, The Sisters of Transistors, Sirconical, MC Strategy, Dr Butler's Handstand Medicine Band, Peek Adore, Sundowner. The artists also present a series of radio broadcasts featuring copyleft licensed audio material including: new music, film soundtracks, archive material from the Open Music Archive and discussions about libre culture. (Free-to-air Matinee 2-4pm daily & Free-to-air copyleft mix 8-10pm daily. Tune in: 106.5FM / artradio.fm) For two weeks Free-to-air opens up a temporary channel for music, exchange and discussion that operates beyond individual proprietary and commercial interests – a series of truly free broadcasts. The invitation is still open for bands and musicians to respond to the rare out-of-copyright folk, blues, and jazz from the Open Music Archive. It’s a unique opportunity to get to know and work with forgotten lyrics, chords, melodies and beats - to make covers and new versions of old tracks.
