Record label assigns authorship to "Nelson-Touchstone", as do the notes in Harry Smith's Anthology booklet. www.78discography.com does not assign authorship, nor does victor.library.ucsb.edu.

Hubert Nelson and James D Touchstone were the founding members of Nelstone's Hawaiians [1]. There appears to be no information available about the death dates of these artists, meaning that if the accreditation on the record label is correct, this composition is of unknown copyright status.

However, the Roud Folksong Index classes this song as a version of Roud 73 or Child 155.

Wikipedia dates this song back to at least the 18th century and possible much earlier. Therefore there are grounds for treating this composition as public domain.
