Neither Anthology booklet assigns authorship, nor does www.78discography.com.

Harry Smith's Anthology booklet calls this a "well known tune".

According to the Where Dead Voices Gather blog, "The song dates from the early to mid 19th century. Among its earliest published forms is in Old Dan Emmett’s Original Banjo Melodies (1844)."

There are good grounds for treating this composition as public domain.
