Record label assigns authorship to "Thomas", as does Harry Smith's Anthology booklet.

According to wikipedia, "The whereabouts of Thomas after his last recording in 1929 have not been chronicled. While one report places him in Texas in the 1950s, most biographers indicate he died in 1930 when he would have been in his mid-50s."

Thus, it is possible that this composition has been public domain since 1st January 2001, but it just as well may remain in copyright until some time in the 2020's.
